Okay, I found one. Check this out: I'm pretty sure it's Edo period, but still.... Now we know how the Japanese would do a face grill for their armour. Anyone want to make me one? Tony

Hmmmm, I think I like it.
Perhaps this is an alternative to the mempo I want. Any ideas of how strong it is, perhaps under SCA combat conditions?

Saiaiko-hime, If welded, it would be as strong as any other welded SCA grill...

Well, dang it then!
That's what I am going to have to make (or find some really nice friendly armorer to make)! Perhaps modified with almond eyes and a slightly amused look to the kewpie-mouth. Perfect!
Thanks Bryant-dono!

Is anyone seeing what I am seeing when I look at this grill? It is twisted wire with the bracing bits added with fold-overs. I would think that the same design, though I must say, sort of makes me gak a bit, could be done per SCA standards with welded bar... I do have to admit I am more fond of the traditionally styled kendo-dogu men grill or a good old fashioned full so men for heavy weapons combat... But that is just me... Saiaiko-hime - how do I know that if you had a grill like this, the "almond shaped eyes" would have thick, false eyelashes and the "pursed lips" would be done up with a hot pink lipstick... ...you girl you... It's a throwaway illo -- one of a dozen or so hitaigane -- in a small photo in the second volume of Zusetsu Katchû Shû from Gakken. THere's no date, no provenance, nothing -- just a "this is a collection of forehead protectors". I generally agree on the aesthetics. I've always favored a nice, simple kendo style grill. But think about it. This was actually done by a Japanese armourer FOR Japanese armour. Not period, sure, but more "period" -- and real in terms of intention as armour -- than a kendo grill. Think about this, though. This isn't what a Japanese armourer *might* do with a grill. This *IS* what a Japanese armourer *DID* do with a grill. THat's good enough of an argument for me. I agree, the implications of what it is is very cool...the fact that they had SCA in Japan before we ever thought of it is great, and makes me giggle thinking how many people on the battlefield are wearing almost a Japanese Grill ! There is the pretext we need boys and girls to convert all of the nice gaijin to Japanese persona!!!
As for the above being sick - two phrases come to mind... The first is a phrase that Ogami-sensei says often - "Never give a gun to a duck!" The second one from S. Freud - "Za zickness of za mind iz qvite often not zickness - but ze manifestaition of some deeper, less trodden path..." <fake german accent mine>
Path? There is a path? How come nobody told me there is a path? ;-) Date

Think about this, though. This isn't what a Japanese armourer *might* do with a grill. This *IS* what a Japanese armourer *DID* do with a grill. I get this ... I really do. But, for the SCA, it is still more ahistorical and atypical than a samurai carrying a buckler (te-date) or using a fan for parrying weapon (or, perhaps, carrying a crossbow). I guess I'm worried that the unwashed hordes will start saying - "Mr. Bryant says face grills are period for Japanese."

I am very interested in this for a few reasons: - This seems to satisfy the safety aspect of face protection without having the potential field-of-vision restriction of a full mempo and the frickin' irritating bar-in-line-of vision problem I am having with my current grill.
- It allows for better facial expression through the grill and within the design of the grill. I am thinking of the way faces were done on full/half mempo, including moustaches etc.
- It seems to fit the overall aesthetic of my period's armor and my persona.
While I don't think I seriously would put lashes and "lipstick" on my menpo/grill, the sentiment is absolutely accurate. Since I am learning how to control the combat environment, I want to maximize the effect my facial expressions have on my opponent. As Date-dono pointed out, I am a girl. I feel this gives me certain advantages, especially as a minority on the battlefield. Think about what it would be like if I came up to you and flashed you the typical submissive-girl-flirting eye pattern. Whether or not you realized that this was a contrived device, it would most likely give me a moment's gain on striking as your brain processed the totally incongruous information. A similar thing happened to me at a fight practice when a certain full-mempo'd squire stuck his tongue out at me through the mouth hole. I was tent pegged. So, long story short (too late), I am going to make this grill.

I can kind of see that. Sigh. The thing is, if you're wearing a Japanese helmet, you need to do something. I love the somen idea, but I can't do contacts and I can't see more than 1 foot without glasses -- so that means a grill of some kind. This grill, at least, was done by people who were making the stuff we *usually* try to copy. I wish I had found something more normal (I would have loved to see a Muromachi kendo mask ) but this is what I found. I'm a bit ambivalent. It is a bit over the top... Tony
