A friend recently presented me with this kabuto, it looks genuine, though somone tried to repaint it! I was just wondering about the attachment of the mabizashi, i thought they were usualy attached level with the koshimaki, the patina inside suggests that it's genuine, and my friend who deals in antique european arms & armour doesn't think it's fake! Opinions anyone? hometown.aol.co.uk/fabbro2000/myhomepage/collection.htmlCheers Matt

If it's real it's got some Edo looking things about it.
Can you take some photos of the inside/underside?

Will do!
I'll put pics of the shikoro lames up as well, it's hineno style, for sugake odoshi, with the upper edge cut to a wavy pattern, the bottom most lame finished with textured laquer.

Well, one of the photos is a dead giveaway.
Congratulations. You have a Saotome-bachi kabuto. Probably mid-to-late Edo. Something seems odd about the visor -- it's possibly a later attempt to restore or resurrect the bowl, but the visor isn't typical Saotome work.
Not a bad toy to have. <G>
