This is the start of a new Clan Yama Kaminari refurbishment project. We are building all new helmets for our fighters, and this is the first hachi off the line. This will have two rigid shikoro, and two or three floating shikoro laced in sugake nimai odoshi, and will have a bar grill of the kendo menpo style (in looks and shape) for SCA heavy weapons combat. Tomorrow the shikoro and kasa jirushi no kuwan go on, a copper tehen and hopefully the grill. Then we have only about 10 more to go... :-) Date Saburou Yukiie Yama Kaminari Ryu

Is the mabizashi on the older kabuto normally that flat? I would have expected a little more angle than that...of course, that'll just mke it easier for me when I get around to building one.

1. What finish do you plan on adding to them? Russeting? Rustole Laquering? Just leaving it like it is?
2. Are the plates just riveted, or are welded as well?

Here is the helm finished and with its first rough coat of paint... I have had good reviews from the Clan Fighters that have seen it so far, and our resident Earl Martial likes it - especially the grill. ( I do to!!) I will post pics of the finished kabuto when it is laced and ready for its new owner... I have the second one nearly complete, needing only a few more shikoro...I spent the last few days working on a wooden form as mentioned in Hiraizumi's web site www.sengokudaimyo.com so the bowls will come out consistent. That grill looks awful steep. Will you be able to tilt your head down to look at your feet? (And that's an awful small fukigaeshi for a Heian/Kamakura helmet... ) Nice, though. Damn, I really wish I had access to (and the ability to work) hot -- I can't do bargrills. Sigh. Effingham

Hiraizumi-sensei - These kabuto, per Clan Request, are supposed to represent sengoku jidai refits of of heian jidai hachi, so the fukigaeshi are perforce small, and the lacing is set up for sugake odoshi with solid lame shikoro. Most of the Clan, as you know, follow sengoku practices.
Only Saiaiko-hime and myself will have proper heian/kamakura jidai kabuto. Ours will be 32 ken hoshi bachi (marubachi) with kebiki odoshi kiritsuke kozane shikoro. :-)
As for the grill - there is plenty of vertical movement to clear the chest...and it gives great vision. You will love this...I worked the grill cold, using a roller and carefull hammering of the "keel".
I might have Michael the Tinkerer tack the keel to the bars, but it is sturdy enough that I have no problem with its strength.
I am happy with the way this came out, and have many more to go. After this batch, and a few commission pieces I need to take care of, I am going to turn to dress pieces. I feel like doing just a bunch of work...heh heh heh.

I worked the grill cold, using a roller and carefull hammering of the "keel". Could you go into a little more detail on how you did that? The prospect of being able to do my own grill without needing heat is exciting. Arigatou! - Fujiwara
