Fujiwara-dono... The "keel" is a piece of 1/8"x 1/2" barstock that I clamped into a vice...With carefull prodding with a hammer, I was able to pull the thing into shape, taking it out now and then to hammer it flat. 1/4" holes were drilled on 1"centers to make for SCA legal Heavy Weapons rules.
The 1/4" round hot rolled barstock that makes the grill was fed through a roller, which has three round cylinders in close proximity. The radius was set to match the width of the grill, but i hammered in a small "bend" where the keel goes, to give it that Kendo Men look. The ends of the bar (after feeding it through the keel<<how many grills have you made Date...don't flare both ends before you put it in the keel!!!>>) The flattening was done on an anvil with the flat side of a peening hammer. I drilled the ends to accept the rivit and violla. I added the bars to the grill one at a time, and fitted everything with nuts and bolts till I had everything where I wanted...then began riviting. It is not hard at all, and even without a roller, one could carefully form the bars into shape using a wooden or leather mallet of sufficient mass over the horn of an anvil. Hope this helps...back to cooking bacon and eggs for sunday brunch... Date

Ah, that makes sense. I was wondering if everyone was going to be going do-maru crazy or something. Sweet. As one with very little vertical neck, I'd have trouble with it, probably, but that's good to know. I can't wait to see these in action. I've been thinking about doing a 28-plate shi-ho-jiro for some time now. You might have just forced my hand. Again -- nice work! Effingham

My new personal bowl will be shihojiro, (probably polished stainless...)with all the tokage gashira and kanemono. I will build it so I can use a grill, or the current menpo...(yea, I know somen are way not right, but it looks good...)
The deapth of the keel can be adjusted, or brought in closer to the neck, possibly with a pendant yodare gake of three lames or so...I do not believe it would be a problem...let me know if you would like help...
