There's a single rather famous (well, to armour junkies) example of a solidly riveted shikoro. No one knows anything about it, though. Okay, I've fixed the scanner. Tony

I have seen this before...it totally suprised me that it was a kasa-jikoro...way interesting... I keep wanting to make a dress reproduction of this, so I can say..."oh...but it did exist...heh heh heh Notice the Heian/Kamakura-jidai maezashi design...compared to the one I am working on for the Y.K. refurbishment project...rather similar, eh? The one I've been fantasizing about doing is this one: I've seen perhaps five different momonari with a single-lame shikoro, and part of me thinks: "cool!"

Effingham-dono,
In that picture of the momonari, that central ridge...is that an artifact of the construction (two plates put together), or is that so heavily lacquered that the bowl is smooth? If so, where did the ridge come from?
- Fujiwara, on whom it suddenly dawned that a kabuto with single lame shikoro might be WAY easier to build

Actually, momonari were usually of four-plate construction. I don't really know where the ridge comes from. It's not actually necessary for construction, but it does add a heck of a lot of strength to the thing. Many momonari don't have it, however, so it's a "typical option."

Eff, Regarding that image of Date Saburou Yukiie's hachi below, would this be relatively similar to the construction of the hachi on your site? If so: - if I wanted to do the ribbed version
- would I simply increase the pattern on the rivet end and raise that up 90 degrees?
- I guess the main question is, rivets showing, or ground flush?
Thanks, Phillip

They're totally different animals. Date-dono is making a Heian/Kamakura style hoshi-kabuto. Their structure, shape, and construction are a bit different from sengoku styles as patterned on my site. Basically, they're all multiplates, but the Heian helmets typically use identically shaped wedges instead of "sculpted" ones, as they are round rather than head shaped. They are also typically smaller, sit higher on the head, and come to more of a "point" on the top, as shown by his example.

Eff, Understood. I have a further question regarding your 8 plater : <http://www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/graphics/patterns/8plPattern.PDF> I see 5 plates there, starting from the top and working left to right, tell me if I understand your pattern correctly: Top #1 - front center/back center Top #2 - Right rear plate 1 Bottom #1 - Right rear plate #2 Bottom #2 - right rear plate #3 Bottom #3 - appears to be a half section of front center/back center? Do you have any pictures of one of yours assembled, or even in progress? Just trying to get a feel for the contours involved. Thanks for your help, Phillip

I'm kinda boggled by the question. The pieces are clearly labled:
REAR -------- R1
R2 --- R3 --- Front
With the front being a half-pattern.
I'm afraid I don't have any photos of one. I'll have to look to that.

I'm kinda boggled by the question. The pieces are clearly labled: On most of my MS Windows machines, I cannot see the labels and receive the following error ... Unable to find or create the font 'Compleat-Bold.' Some characters may not display or print properlyThis is not a problem on my Linux boxes.
