Jo,
Nice shots. I always have problems with refraction at Ueno. What camera are you using?

Yet another case of someone not actually stopping to look at the real thing before starting. Sigh. I'm gonna have stickers and cards printed up that say that, I swear. .. Effingham I think you should have them printed on yellow and red cards, so you can give them out & inform the offender of whether their their violation was just 'BAD' or 'REPORT FOR EXECUTION BAD'... www.fielden.org/gallery/album06/aan is definitely a red-card.

It's one of those things where I can *kind* of see what he was trying to do (whether he knows what he was trying to do is a different story ) but.... man. Yeah. Effingham

Mykaru, thanks. I used a Canon D60 and in some cases also a small panasonic FZ2 (If I didn't bring the bigger one). I plan to go to Ueno again this weekend as there is, a special kabuto exhibition ( www.tnm.jp/en/servlet/Con?pageId=B01&processId=01&event_id=1500) I will try to make new pictures and post them. I will try this time to use a polarizer filter to avoid the reflection (I work most without flash anyway), but I'm afraid it is too dark to keep my camera still. But I will give it my best shot. (anybody has some good tips to take pictures of armour behind glass?) I will also try to post some pictures by the end of next week of my own haramaki I made. Jo p.s. by the way, I adore your armours that I have seen so far. As you will see, mine is not of 'real' materials

I was there about a week before the new exhibit started. I suspect the only difference in the NEW kabuto exhibit is the 2 kabuto "on loan" mentioned. It is probably over but... in April the art museum on the north end of Ueno park was running a "Treasures of Itsukushima Jinja" exhibition. A MUST see (no cameras though ).

Hi
Yes, I saw that 'Treasures of Itsukushima Jinja' exhibition. Very well worth it. I think people got suspicious when I kept (and kept) coming back to the three armours on display... I knew the sets off coure from books, but seeing it in real with your nose 30 cm from it is quite amazing. The no photo thing is really a shame because it is a great opportunity to make detail pictures or view you don't find in books. Anyway.

Yes on both counts. they were that way about me the 30 minutes or so I spent around the armours. I REALLY wanted my camera. I did buy the postcards they had of some of the armours but it's not the same. The museumshop at Ueno used to have a copy of Dr. Sasama's big armour book, but when I went in for it they had sold it. I really couldn't afford the 83,000 yen for it anyway.

I also bought the cards, but now I need to buy a magnifying glas to go with it.
About that book. I heard about it but never saw it. Is it that good? (too expensive anyway...)

Jo,
Is it that good? Well , it covers most everything the "Nihon no Katchu Bugu jiten" covers, has bigger illustrations and parts of it ARE in English. Next time I'm in Japan, I plan to bring funds to buy it and hunt Kanda-Jinbocho. Hopefully I'll find a copy.

I held that book in my hands while a Japanse clerk nervously watched the hippy paw through it. ;D A copy of the same sold on ebay some months (years?) ago for several hundred dollars.
