Yet another case of someone not actually stopping to look at the real thing before starting. Sigh.
I'm gonna have stickers and cards printed up that say that, I swear.
Show me ONE example somewhere of rectangular sets of kusazuri.

Being a newbie fighter with a good chunk of the main body armor donated to him, if I were to go completely out of my gourd and purchase this crud to expedite my situation so as to do combat archery in the Japanese battle at WW, could I just paint or lacquer it black to match what I have? Mind you what I already have is metal, so the two textures might clash.

I knew someone would mention that. That's why I said kusazuri *sets*.
Sets of kusazuri taper.
Even in the case of scale kusazuri -- which have to have rectangular rather than trapezoidal plates owing to their construction -- the bottom lame is wider than the top.

Mind you what I already have is metal, so the two textures might clash. Sigh. You could, in that you could lay out the cash, get the, um, armour, unlace it, paint it, lace it back up, and embarass yourself by wearing it. Or, you could not embarass your Prince by coming over to his place on the various work nights that will be happening, and be instructed in how to make something decent. Besides, pickle bucket is too light for armour without way too much padding. And you could even pay back a little with some grunt labor, if you're so inclined. Seriously, though, I have a fair amount of armour to build, and it's always nice to have someone else in the shop. I sure hope that stick_thug_hamish isn't the Hamish that's one of my guards. I'd hate to have to order a seppuku over this... But waht do you expect from this seller -- they have a SCA label on this: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=80916&item=5582060660 I'm sure that Eleanor of Acquitaine had one just like it! (That god it's 'one-of-a-kind')

Hi,
This is probably not a good post as a first post, but this topic (rectangular kusazuri) has been on my mind since a few weeks since I saw a picture in the excellent museum catalogue 'kuroda kei no katchu to token' on page 22 and also on page 9. (I can make a picture of the image in the book, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post that and how to do it??)
As far as I can see it has a rectangular kusazuri, and it was the first one I saw like that. So it seems it existed (but probably extremely rare if Mr. Bryant has not seen it) although I don't like the esthetics of it.
This brings me to another question. I always learned that there are certain rules in armour building, but then others say that there are actually no fixed rules as there will always be exceptions to the rule. So the question is, how far can you/they go in this?
Later a more proper intro.

Hi, I just oploaded the picture temporarily. It looks very 'unbalanced' in my eyes and I don't really understand why it was done as such. I can't really see well if it is only the front one, or if each one of them is rectangular. Anyway here it is. Jo

Kitadate-denka(-dono? ;D)
When are these work nights you speak of? I'd happily join and provide plenty of grunt labor, though one must keep in mind my work schedule is as ephemeral as fleeting beauty. The only day that I can semi-regularly count on having off is Sundays. Feel free to contact me off list, gacarlisle@msn.com

You can always trust Edo Period stuff to violate the rules. It's what Edo did best. Totally insane, impractical, and often butt-ugly stuff....

hi, Thanks for the warning. To come back on your remark about looking at the real thing first. I have uploaded some (hm) pictures of Soma Noma-oi, Jidai Matsuri and some Japanese museum pictures, in case somebody wants to have more armour to look at. The original ones (6MP) are better to check the details, but they are just too big to upload. www.pbase.com/joanseeuw/samuraiLooking forward to the book by the way... Jo
