Hey all. Was examing some pictures closely today, and the suspensory cords that connect the munaita to the watagami have engendered some confusion. I see how they are on the top of the munaita, and dive through two holes in that plate. Then they appear to come up through two lower holes, cross, and go back down through the opposite hole. All well and good. However, a lot of the suits look like they use pretty thick cords, which looks really nice. I would like to do this as well. But it occurs to me that when I do, I am going to have 4 enormous hard knots pushing into my chest behind the munaita. This is undersireable, in my opinion. How is this done in period armors, and how should I do it to avoid these big knots on my chest?

Instead of using knots at the chest area, you just double the cord, bend it in half, put the middle at the top and then thread as usual.

Kiyoshi Right...that part that is the middle is the part that shows, with the "frog" on it for attaching the munaita to the watagami. Its the other two ends I'm worried about. You double the cord, pass it through the "frog" and thread the two ends down through holes in the munaita, then back up through lower holes, then cross horizontally and back down through the same two lower holes. But the ends of the cord end up behind the munaita, forcing me to knot them off there and put those knots (which can end up pretty big if you use thick cord) between my chest and the munaita plate. I COULD reverse the cord direction, and put the center of it between me and the munaita...but then I would be passing then ends through the frog and tying them off there, leaving a couple of large visible knots. Thats not a good option either. I was thinking I could get some form of crimp tubing, run the cords through the munaita on the last pass, then stuff the two ends into the "splice" and crimp it down on them, avoiding knots at all. But I was curious as to how they finished off those ends of the cord behind the munaita in period?

No knots. Glue. IF the hole is sized properly, getting 2 lengths through said hole is a B$#@h! Unbraid slightly and add glue to maintain size.

Unbraid slightly and add glue to maintain size. Ah... soka.
