Hello people, my first post on this forum.. I am currently working on making some haidate with Effs page as information source (It takes me a while to decipher Effs tutorials since English isn't my first language) and I have a little question.. The plates are attached to the fabric by stitching in the fabric and middle row of lacing and the top holes of the plates (except the top row of plates where you stitch in the middle and upper lacing), correct? Why dont you just lace the plates to the fabric, wouldn't that be more rigid and durable? What kind of thread do you recommend for this? More like a cord then a thread? Thank you for any replies.. /Xtracted

Took me a while to figure this out.
Mildew.
If you lace the plates into the fabric, it becomes difficult to seperate them later when you want to replace the fabric. So all the little metal bits (kote, suneate, haidate) are laced or connected by chainmail into larger pieces and only then are sewn onto a fabric foundation.
This is speculation.
