I didn't expect to be able to post anything like this yet, but I'm finding that the adzuki beans are just starting to get to a harvestable phase. I thought some people might be interested in the progress of our adzuki and soy beans--they were planted as part of our on-going backyard series 'Will it grow?' (rather like Letterman's 'Will it Float?', only we put seeds in the ground and see what comes of it ). The adzuki seeds were actually old, and we weren't positive they would sprout, but they surprised us. The soybeans were just dried soybeans from the store--didn't figure those would actually grow, but they did, to our surprise. Now the fruit is about harvestable--we had our first few pods today--and I am going to try to document it. With any luck we'll be able to eventually present various dishes and foodstuffs from scratch: grow the soy beans, and then make the shoyu, hishio, or miso from there. Not sure what period uses for adzuki beans were, but we can definitely find a use for them. -Ii
