Ive seen pictures of a pair of the winter geta also wondered how far they go back as well. Ive been very tempted to convert the pair of geta i have into some, or figure out a way to temporarly attach them for the winter.

I wonder if Masako-dono is describing the 'spats' used to cover the toes and front part of the foot on some geta?
edit - to add .... just like Saiaiko described (sometimes one shouldn't read the posts most recent first.)

IIRC, those toe coverings on geta are period for Heian. That or someone has taken artistic liscence with Genji monogatari, and if that's the case, I say it's time to form a lynch mob.

All the beautiful pretties. Lovely shoes. I want! When in doubt, ask I say, and there was a delivery! Perfect for the person who doesn't know the terms to do the necessary searches--Me!
Oh sure, modern stuff I don't have a problem with, but to be pointed along the right way for something more true to form for the time... that's something else. Kegutsu, the lovely boots for instance, would have taken me a very long time to stumble across if left to my own.
;D Thank you all.

Hey, I didn't know any of this when I got started either. Right now I'm over on Gaijin Geisha doing Karaginu Mo For Dummies (TM) as I translate stuff from Kass' site for a young lady who wants to make one and is having trouble wrapping her head around the idea that it is supposed to be that huge on her. Stick around here, and you'll absorb stuff by osmosis. The acquisition of an armor vocabulary in Japanese is particularly insidious.

Considering that I've recently given into the lure and taken up heavy weapons I think I'll be beginning to learn that insidious vocabulary fairly soon. It only took the guys three or four years now to finally seduce me away with that siren's call. So stubborn of me. So stubborn of them.

You go!
Besides, the boy types around here appreciate females who can say "Nice armor!" and sound like they mean it.

I seriously love Japanese shoes. This is a link to what I think is one of the most beautiful pairs... Out of period for creation, but the style is old. Link to Kyoto National Museum * * Moderator edit to shorten URL

I ended up talking to a friend today. I spoke to her right before jumping into training in a new hire at work so what I remember is slightly fragmented. She said something to the point of 'its normal to see geta just a shade too short for the feet wearing them', 'proper' came up, as did 'aesthetically pleasing'. I did warn it was a fragmented memory So a lot can be taken out of context. She also said that geta with the wide strips of fabric as opposed to the more cord-like in width are far more comfortable across the tops of the feet. There was a particular term, but of course my brain still isn't coughing it up.

I read that at least for Zori, having your heel hang off the back a bit keeps sand and dirt from being flung up at the back of your clothing. Seems to make sense. To me it also keeps them from looking like you're wearing a pair of "duck feet" also. I can't imagine it would be for comfort since having your heels press into the edge of the wood wouldn't seen comfortable, to me at least.

Actually Madyaas-hime, once the pressure extends through the elephant-hide callous and cuts off the feeling in the nerve endings, it's disalarmingly cozy. Not to mention it gives me some killer looking calves!

Not to mention it gives me some killer looking calves! Well, in that case then it's a surprise footwear is worn at all I guess I need to work on killing the nerve endings in my tender western feet before I run around in geta . PS: I've already got killer looking calves.. a body builder once asked "Dang, how did you get your calves that big?" I said "It's called being a fat kid and walking everywhere.
