Ok I have spent a bunch of time cutting out cardboard I went directly from the patterns on Effingham Sensei's site for the "new" pattern with five lames After comparing it to my measurements I decided to stick with it and then see how it works after putting it together Here is a pic: Next is lots of tape!

Looks most armor-like to this useless and decorative female. Actually, the shapes look right, so it'll be a matter of fit-checking next. Good job!

Makiwara - thank you and may I respectfully point out your oxymoron - you have put the word "female" with "useless" and even if said use was "only" being decorative, you have shown yourself to be both helpful with information and a source good will - thanks Ok that aside I have used a lot of tape - be warned before you look at the pics I didnt take any pics of me wearing it - mostly because I didnt make any shoulder straps or ropes to tie it closed and also because its hard to take a photo of yourself (I havent got anywhere to set up the camera to do the 10 second dance) The top of the munaita is 3 inches below the the top of my sternum (the hole at the base of the throat) and the top of the oshitsuke no ita at the back is about the same height the tateage at front allow me full movement of arms I have been fortunate in that the pattern as provided seems to be the right size - save for a little need to tighten it at the chest - how much space under the do should I have? just enough so it is snug with everything underneath it? or should I be able to fit my fingers or even hand inside easily? for the moment the hinges are tape but the will be thick sections of leather laced on I have decided to make the kusazuri as a belted version - to limit the number of holes in my Do and also for ease of transporting the armour A couple of questions: (yes more - most of the others have been answered by trolling through Tousando archives and sengodaimyo site) If I cut the patterns out of already curved plastic barrel will this affect the way the pieces fit together? (I noticed with the cardboard that the patterns causes a nice curve when cut out of flat pieces are put together) For haramaki do - I put kohaze between the top tateage (oshitsuke no ita) and a rope at the bottom to tie around the front, but what about at the middle? (from the top lame) or does the solidity of the lames keep this closed? how "closed" is closed? meaning should there be any space between the back edges of the haramaki?or should it have a gap? or should they butt to gether? I think if I used a cowards plate it wouldnt matter as it would be covered how important is it to have a "cowards plate"? I think I may go for one of these just for "looks" (as I have motorcycle back armour I have always worn as I like my spine the way it is!) are the watagami for the mogami do the same as the pattern on sengodaimyo site? or were they just for sendai-do? much thanks in advance James (Yamamoto Kenjiro Yoshimitsu)

Looking good. Patterning first is a lesson I wish I hadn't learned the hard way. Nice job!
Couple things: - You can get piano hinges (the brass-looking thin hinges from the hardware store) and they work and look really nice. I haven't tried leather, and I'm sure it would work, but just sayin'. - I would cut the watagami pattern from Nihon Katchu Seisakuben out in cardboard, then check the fit and modify. It may need serious modification. Mine usually do.

Say, might a lady borrow a piece of paper? I seem to have left mine at home.

Honda-san (sorry I really dont understand the use of -dono or -hime just yet, as I have only ever been conversation with modern Japanese... -san, -sama and -chan are the only thigns I understand at moment)
anyways piano hinges, 3 reasons I am not using them 1: Id have to go looking - I am not sure if they are so common in Australia (not much of a reason I know) 2: the leather is somethign I am used to and undertsand and have on hand 3: at the moment the edges of each Do section are jagged due to the square ends of the pattern, yes it has to be fixed... I am thinking I will fix it by making it then trimming it smooth
watagami is next
patterns I have learned the hard way through previous fun with jewellery, swords, knives and clothes I have found the only people who work without patterns are the ones of have enough experience that the patterns are in their heads already

It's gender-neutral and relatively "all-purpose" as you're getting started. I have a question, though. where is the closure going to be? How are you going to secure the armor so it wont flop around when you're trying to run around in it?
Just curious.

The closure will be at the back - haramaki Do and as per instructions on Effingham-don's site there is a frog between the tope tateage - actually the oshituske-no-ito and rope attached at the bottom corners which tie around at the front (or I have heard it is possible to tie all way around body and then tie at back...
I am still yet to do the shoulder straps and ther will also be an over armour belt

Another query for you all for an opinion
The only plastic I have gotten is blue - yeah yeah I know
so my choices are - paint it or cover it in fabric I am thinking the best option is to cover it in a red fabric that has a very subtle japanese print... or just plain red
I am going to lace it with black laces (easiest to get) and the highlight laces will be white
any thoughts?

I am in Australia Rhino hide doesnt work for me... I have heard other Aussies have had the same problem what was on the page? Sorry about that! It's probably some Department of Homeland Security measure to protect us against the duck billed platypus. Or to protect you from deep fried Twinkies and NASCAR. It was a test of Krylon Fusion paint on barrel plastic. Here are the concluding paragraphs, which is really the guts of the matter: Conclusion
This test seems to show that the Krylon Fusion paint adheres well to the surface of the plastic and will resist flaking in most cases. The paint holds up well under plastic to plastic abrasion. The paint holds up well against rattan strikes. It does not do well against abrasion by metal.
Recommendations
Based on this test, I would readily recommend the use of black paint on black plastic surfaces. The gloss paint will add a laqcuer like sheen and will wear better than actual laquer (which has a tendency to flake). The piece will undoubtedly be marred by repeated rattan strikes, but with little or no flaking, should be easy to repaint. I would cautiously recommend other colors on black. The plastic must be prepared well since the paint is not completely opaque. I will be testing a red paint on black plastic in the summer of 2004 and will add a paragraph to this report based on that field test. Experiences by others are welcome.
