Testing out my new camera ... The large kegutsu are based on a rubber boot and have been used to fight in the snow and rain. They use faux fur from Wal-Mart. The smaller pair are based on a slipper with the arch cut away. They use a fake mink cut from an old coat. Perhaps not as nice as real fur on leather soles, but I like them. Yay, your camera works! (I'm still learning to use mine, especially as the controls are not intuitive and I have to keep looking at the quick-guide.)
Am I correct in assuming that the lining keeps the rubber boot base from being uncomfortably cold? (I'm flashing back to a pair of rubber riding boots I used to have back in the day and I'd either sweat or freeze in 'em.)
Snow. I really don't miss snow.... Great, now my feet are cold.

My dear Lady Makiwara, Look at some of the pics of me in the snow and tell me about cold feet!
You cannot get cold feet now - you are a co-conspirator!
Otagiri-dono, Those kegutsu look very nice! Good job, and I like the idea of outdoor and indoor versions... Date

(I'm flashing back to a pair of rubber riding boots I used to have back in the day and I'd either sweat or freeze in 'em. Nope. The fabric only extends just past the fur. It does not line the boot. Thus, sweating in the rubber boot is a problem.

Don't suppose those puppies are big enough you could fit a removable, washable absorbent foot liner into? Barring that, you're probably going to think about frequent, diligent sock changes and letting the boots air out after you've just taken 'em off. Lieutenant Dan has two rules. Don't do anything stupid and take care of your feet. But, yeah, they look so cool! Makiwara, tossing out ideas.

Don't suppose those puppies are big enough you could fit a removable, washable absorbent foot liner into? No. I think that Ogami Busho, Date, and Saiaiko have the right idea ... stop making farby gear and make a proper set out of the correct materials.

No. I think that Ogami Busho, Date, and Saiaiko have the right idea ... stop making farby gear and make a proper set out of the correct materials. "All the cool kids are doing it." Well, yeah, ideally..... Call them prototypes then. It's a perfectly useful euphemism for rationalizing an experiment with something and acknowledging that you have yet to get it right. I've been noodling around working on paper fans on and off for almost a year now. I'm FINALLY getting to the point where I'm not completely disgusted with the results and I've still got a long way to go. So they're still prototypes. "It's sticks, it's paper, how hard can it be?" Its good to get a feel for the patterns and construction details before laying out a ton of cash for the 'real thing.' Out here in the boondocks, its harder to draw upon the accumalated experience of the Yama Kaminari (at least until they upload it all onto this board!).

That, my friend, is why we want you to look at the www.Yamakaminari.com site now and then! New stuff goes up every few days, if we can help it! Date

Heee haww! Those are some fine looking tootsies!
I especially like the fabric you chose for the taller ones. I'll see if we can't get up a few how-to articles on the site in the next couple of days.

I'm working on the kegutsu article already. I have all the photos in place and only need to draw a few illustrations. (And if you've seen my illustrations before, you know I am unhampered by such things as clarity, perspective, or comprehensibility.)
The text should take just a few hours, so it should be up on the Yama Kaminari site in the next week or three. The article will cover both Heian and Momoyama style of boots.
By the way, if anyone is interested, my article on how to make a shime-daiko drum was just posted on the Yama Kaminari site. (I'm also working on an article on how to make European turnshoes. Can you tell I'm a compulsive teacher?)
