Lords of the forest Piled up on the hillside, faces in the trees Silent, verdant royalty peer out from the ages past. (Comment: On the way back from the Elephant Nature Park when I saw trees, covered in vines. They looked like elephants. Where there were once 100,000 elephants around the beginning of the century, there are now less than 5,000; and many of them are domesticated. There are people trying to repopulate the near empty forests, however.)

Blazing pumpkin rinds Join eggshells and persimmon Peels in a bucket. I read the recipe twice: WHY is so much filling left?

The turbulent waves No longer chew our vessel's Storm-battered hull; How pleasant are the salt fires And pleasantly lapping seas.
(We're back!)

The scent of spices Is not half so pleasing as Your smiling faces. As we sit down together, Nothing can separate us.
I will have to report on whether Fuyu persimmon pie is a winner after we eat tonight. I've never made it before....

Upon the morrow You shall begin your journey To the far off pines; But will you still think of me Crossing modori-bashi?
(Family leaves tomorrow. It has been fun, but tiring.)
Note: pine = matsu in Japanese, which is a homonym for the verb "to wait". Note: modori-bashi = "returning bridge", a famous bridge in the capital along the first avenue.

I will have to report on whether Fuyu persimmon pie is a winner after we eat tonight. I've never made it before.... keyingredient.com/recipes/17783/fuyu-persimmon-pie/Everyone liked it. One of the guests said it was like eggnog with fruit in it. It had a tendency to fall apart when sliced, so it might not hurt to thicken the sugar mixture with a little cornstarch before baking. www.producepair.com/recipes/pumpkin_maple_pie.htm Less sweet, and subtle compared to every other pumpkin pie I've ever had. I used fresh pumpkin and heavy cream instead of condensed milk. Might do condensed milk next time and see whether it affects the consistency.

11/27/09 Mantled in dark clouds The hills hunch shoulders against The rain's cold fingers. I watch from my window and Wonder when it will rain here.
(Answer, about three minutes after I wrote this....)

11/28/09 Raging like wild beasts, They throw themselves hungrily Against the pale sand Such roaring surf can hardly Have earned the name "Pacific."

Voices around the fire Conjure ghosts and righteous fear Huddle closer, friend Spindly pines cast long shadows Who knows what lurks past the trees?
(Probably would have been better suited to Halloween, but one never knows what will inspire)

Softer than a cloud It billows from my fingers Like a waterfall. Cutting silk feels like murder And destiny all at once.

Ii dono!
Greetings from Solveig! Thailand must be significantly warmer than the parts of Japan that I am familiar with. Incidentally, nice imagery.

Thailand must be significantly warmer than the parts of Japan that I am familiar with. Even Japan's most southerly parts are farther north than Thailand, which is south of the Tropic of Cancer. Yes, I am a map geek....

In glorious hues It sits on the horizon And makes you wonder, Much as did a wooden chair Within the birthing chamber.
