So, based on photos and drawings, with no idea if it was actually going to work, I made a suikan. * 4 yards of 55 inch wide soft green linen fabric * 14 feet of hand-braided cotton lacing * 10 hand-tied silk yarn kikutoji More pictures at www.ee0r.com/proj/suikan.html. I'll try to get some pictures of it being worn the first time I wear it, which will be next month if I don't get the kariginu finished.

Cool!
I very much like the variegated sleeve cord! I would've gone with narrower braided cord for the collar button and loop, but it looks good.

Thanks!
I had given myself a deadline of today for this project (I've been working on it all week in between sessions of ironing.) and I didn't feel like starting a new braiding project just to finish this garment. In retrospect, I should have used a 1/8 panel himo instead of a 1/4 panel himo, yeah.

As threatened, I made a kariginu. My apologies for the busy, busy background of the photo, but I didn't realize that the photos I took of this project in the sewing room were so awful until after I had already moved it to my office. The kariginu is made from polyester brocade. No apologies for that. Since this is only the second garment of this type I've ever made and only the second lined garment I've ever made, I wasn't going to spend for the 15 yards of proper-width silk brocade that would be necessary. Now that I know I can complete the garment, maybe I will. Maybe next year. The garment is fully lined in a plain black fabric. That was fun. The sleeves are easy to line. The body is also easy if you are confident enough to turn the entire garment through the neck hole. The lacing is some flat 3/8" ribbon from the fabric store. I hope to replace it some time this summer. The collar frog is the only part of this project made from actual silk, since I only needed about two feet of flat braid for that as opposed to the three yards you need for each sleeve. The sleeve lacing is attached through "belt loops". I was hoping that sewing 32 belt loops would be faster than sewing 76 button holes as I did for the suikan. I was wrong, but they probably look nicer. A few more pictures are available at the project page ( www.ee0r.com/proj/kariginu.html), but since I'm still adding explanation to the suikan page there probably won't be any for the kariginu for a bit. The kariginu is so shiny, it really makes the suikan look plain. The suikan will be good for general courting, but the kariginu is fabulous enough for coronation, don't you think?

What do you do if you're asked to lend Japanese garb to His Majesty the Prince of your kingdom when you don't actually have any extra garb to lend? Start sewing, of course. I just finished up my second suikan, and boy are these unlined garments much faster than lined garments. The Prince is a little broader in the shoulders than I am, and definitely more muscular, so this suikan uses a wider body panel than my first one. My wife's new sewing machine does buttonholes automatically, so that part was faster, too. I wish I'd been able to get red linen instead of red linen/rayon, but at last it's not plastic. The kikutoji are made of real silk yarn, though. Store bought braid, but I'm kind of in a hurry. Back:

It looks great! I particularly love the kikutoji. Not bad at all for a last minute project.

Not bad at all for a last minute project. Wellllll... I might call it "last minute", but I tend to plan most of my projects months in advance, so finishing something less than month before it's needed (Pennsic opening ceremonies. His Majesty AEthelmearc has decided his retinue are all to be garbed Japanese and colored Red.) is pushing it.

Speaking of Pennsic, we should probably arrange a get together. I know that there are several classes and a few parties going on at various times. I'll post that to a different thread, however. -Ii
