I agree with first and fourth as well, though number 2 isn't bad. It's unfortunate that you're stuck with three colors, because I think the first one in black and white would be stunning.

I like the first and fourth ones. Also, the banner you made looks amazing. Thanks! I received a bunch of compliments on it and the associated kataginu. This whole fabric paint thing is proving to be quite popular. I did a couple other banners ( 1, 2) as gifts for people, and everybody loves them. First and fourth what about doing horizontal yellow embattlement directly above and below the symbols? I like the way that looks (it has been added to the sketches), but I'm worried that it's a bit too much license with the heraldry. I agree with first and fourth as well, though number 2 isn't bad. It's unfortunate that you're stuck with three colors, because I think the first one in black and white would be stunning. It's not that 3 colors is mandatory, just that Japanese banners are typically limited to 3 colors maximum. I'm sure we've all seen European heraldry (both real world and SCA) that seems to use every available color. The Japanese are, as usual, more restrained. Besides, this is the Barony for the greater Pittsburgh area, and it wouldn't be the same in anything other than black and gold.

I now like 4 and 5 1 is just too busy I dont believe that number 5 is taking to much heraldic license... but then again I think like a Japanese (not European heraldic nazi!) in this regard!

Very nice work as usual, Ishiyama-sama. I missed the middle part of this conversation so you've probably already decided about the BMDL heraldry, but in my mind the horizontal embattlement thingies strongly connote a prince. It might be better avoided for that reason. Did you try running the leaves around the comet? Not sure if that is heraldically wrong ... it also could be just ugly!

Dyed twice (once in yellow and once in black) to get the background, then hand painted to complete my badge.

Did you make it to break down? I didn't make the first one to break down, but this one folds. The off-center hinge pin means that the pole can't be inserted until the stand is fully open, and once the pole is there, the stand can't close up Entirely cypress wood, with no metal fasteners, and mostly hand work for cutting a shaping. I wimped out and used the drill press for the holes because I wanted them to be much rounder than I'm capable fo doing with a saw/chisel.

Since I love hearing our big Scottish Baron giggle like a small Japanese schoolgirl, I've now put "True Baronial Banner" on my project list. I can handle the comet and the wreath no problem, but I'm looking for ideas on how to do an embattled border on a hata-jirushi banner. Finally had the time to tackle this. I'd like to "thank" all of you for recommending the design that required 14 feet of embattled border. "Thank" you. "Thank" you, and your little dogs, too. I'm very happy with the way this came out, though. I'm getting much better at pushing paint with the brush, so the comet is much better than last year's and I'm super happy with the laurel wreath.

Wish I had seen this thread a couple months ago when I had the banner stand I had. It tore down completely and fit in an over the shoulder bag. I will try and find some pictures

Resurrecting an old thread ... could you please supply dimensions (especially for the first, non-folding, stand)? I would like to make one for future indoor events.
TIA.

Here's a PDF of the handout for a class I did on those a couple of years ago. www.ee0r.com/sca/mokkou/files/hatadai.pdfI'm not entirely sure the "instructions" make sense without somebody there to clarify them, but the dimensions of the pieces are there.
