It's almost April and you know what THAT means! Here's the concept: Write one tanka (waka)* a day for the month of April. *Resources on tanka: www.ahapoetry.com/TANKA.HTMwww.americantanka.com/www.wodefordhall.com/heianpoetryjam.htmThe spirit of this poetic form being the impermanence of this dewdrop life, no other make-ups are permitted. If you miss a day, you miss a day and as in real life, you never get it back. (You're on the honor system here....) No limits on subject matter other than any you chose to impose upon yourself. Hopefully, some moment in your day will inspire you to write about it. If you write more than one tanka a day, fine. However, you may not carry over tanka to other days. You have to write a poem on each day. (If you are inspired to "answer" someone else's poem, great. Personally, if I do so, I am not going to count it toward my daily assignment. The idea is to come up with something myself each day. What you do is up to you.)

Soft misty morning The mourning dove’s doleful cry Echoes in my heart Indistinct, my silent tears Like dew on bark, unnoticed
and a bonus poem:
My heart echoes with Words unspoken, deeds undone, And a life unlived A bare-branched tree standing in An orchard in full blossom

I told him that his parking job spoke more about his politics than his truck's bumper stickers did. That's when he called me a punk!

Though you have left us, For that distant horizon, Where we all must go, Never shall we let our hearts, Outdistance your memory. In honor of Mathew Mills: mrmmemorial.com/

They circle above A field of waving banners And fierce combatants. What must the vultures think of Our bloodless battles today?

Chilly perhaps, but the sky is clear as summer and the sun is warm. A fine day for an outdoor fight practice at the park site.

Mockingbird
I hear him in All his virtuoso song, Pining for a mate. I whistle a few brief notes, Delighted when he answers.

Like branches in Spring, Our laughter reaches upwards, Taller than the trees! Were I to grow with such speed, Would The Redwoods be jealous?

For once in beauty Shimmering in a mirror Silvering with age Shut the curtains, draw the blinds There is nothing more to see

Time passes but I can pass this on before you lose your faith in me. Clocks tick forward, but can you look behind? So follow I.

Bed head
Trapped in the mirror As I pass, I glimpse a wild Halo of silver. I look a bit mad and yet A bit magnificent too.

My divided heart~ Laid bare for all to witness, For which would you choose? Still nights and cherry blossoms? Or Spring breezes and pink snow?
