Nice........
Well I guess this path has been laid before me....
It seems as though my wife and I have been placed on the back burner within our little shire... This is a bit of a sore spot with me...
I am going to pick up some more Rattan and make a few more weapons, namely a yari, katana, and a do-nachi... If you have any resources for fighting with these weapons please feel free to email or link them in this thread...
Thanks !!! JJ

Date-Dono, as usual your tales of combat inspire...I would have loved to have seen that...talk about being hoisted by one's one petard (or hakama, whichever) ;D Man, I have GOT to get to a battle Stateside and see YK in action.... Check that I have GOT to get to a battle stateside period Takamori (off to play with cardboard templates again)

It's such a shame. The good news is that there's no rule that says you have to play where you live. I used to live in a shire that got a steady stream of refugees from the barony to our south because their contacts never returned phone calls or attempted to make new people welcome. I hope you can find somewhere that's more friendly.

Otagiri-dono, I cracked up when I clicked on your katana link. The schematic looks to me like the plastic syringes they use to dose horses with oral wormer paste!
On the other hand, it very clearly shows how the pieces parts go together.

Ogami-dono Many thanks for your advise on this matter of shields I spent the last week fashoning a Naginata with the help of a local marshall. This past weekend I was the only fighter at our practice with a pole arm. I found some members that formerly fought with polearms that gave me plenty of advice. Needless to say I died a lot but this was the most fun I have since I joined the SCA six months ago.

As I've just started, I picked up naginata and nitoryu-style (two weapon) sword fighting.
I have had many, many knights strongly "recommend" that I learn sword and shield.
Each time, I flatly deny them, stating that my persona would never use a shield - sooner or later they'll learn. =)

For tournament fighting 2 swords is a viable style to use and many people have become very skilled and capable fighters in tournaments.
A naginata or a Katana on the otherhand isnt a good idea for tournament fighting. Your at a disadvantage against any good fighter with a shield and weapon.
I am not saying for anyone to go against their persona like I do. I also encourage using different weapons then the normal tourney weapon people use because it makes everyone a better fighter. Its my opinion that if you wanna win you have a better chance with a shield and weapon.

Speaking as one who may not fight but who watches a lot and is profoundly right handed, Florentine may not be for everyone. Sir Balin and Sir Tanaka of the East are good two-sword fighters but there are a lot of guys who turn it into sword and stick-shaped-shield!
Maybe not for you, Gunther-dono. I know some terrific single sword fighters.
Can we say "Paul of Bellatrix?" I knew we could. ;D He's old in fighter years. He's from the most sword-and-board oriented kingdom in the Known World. And he can still spank pretty much anyone he likes, fighting nodachi.
Dmitry Shelomin of the Mists routinely fights great weapon - glaive, I think. He's good enough to win the Principality coronet with it. Twice. He's on his second reign right now.
Sir Colin MacLear (West) also fights great sword. He's gotten pretty darn close to winning Crown a couple of times.
For that matter, Otagiri-dono told me he killed a knight fighting katana in a tourney last week. Maybe we can get a "No s***" play by play out of him when he gets back from the war. Nah, he'll probably have more exciting stories, even.
Back East, I recall attending a couple of crown tourneys where part of the requirement of the finals was to fight multiple bouts using different weapons forms. For fighters, it means a bigger bag of tricks to play with. For spectators, it's just plain great to watch.

I know of few individuals that have become quite proficient with a single weapon fighting.(no shield) Generally when you fight with a single weapon your at a disadvantage, its gonna take alot more skill to win with it then with a weapon and shield but its not unheard of. I myself fight with my 1.5/2handed sword quite often and have years of experience with it.
I have never been beat in a tournament by a person with a single weapon with no shield in the dozens of torunaments I have fought in. I like using a single weapon and encourage people to do so but I will always give the warning that they are putting themselvs at a disadvantage.

In Trimaris, the last Crown Lyst required all weapon styles.
Sir Taka(matsu?) is, AFAIK, the only J-Knight in the kingdom. He is also thought of as the best naginata fighter any of the knights have ever seen. =)
