Forgot about the west kingdom having the blanket authorization for heavy combat. I'm in Middle Kingdom, we have to authorize separately for each weapon style, and weapon/shield is the baseline that everyone has to do first.

Okay this may stir up a little bit of trouble, but here goes:
How many Kings, Queen, Dukes or Duchesses are there by right of combat that have actually won using a Japanese fighting style? Did they win against shields or was it the rare shieldless tourney. Can anyone beat Duke Lucan, Duke Sven, Duke Jade with a Japanese style?
How do we balance the recreation aspect of fighting with the sport aspect. It's very easy for a viking to be completely period, when the way we fight favors the western styles. I know there are few Nihonjin in the 1st place, but it seems that no one really overcomes this disadvantage.

Train harder? I have no answers for you. However, Takeshi Reikoku, the current Prince of Cynagua (a principality here in the West Kingdom), won his throne fighting single sword.
And there's Raito-dono in Northshield, who has been king of that kingdom once or twice, IIRC. I don't honestly know what weapons' form(s) he may have been fighting at the time.

Even Norse persona have to forego certain things in an SCA context. They can hide their elbows and knees, but still need hand protection. Bars and grills that we all have to use. And shields that don't break. So they adapt, just like we do.
I don't know if you mean it to come off this way, but it sounds like whining. We play the game because it is fun. It is challenging. And it is what we want to do. If you want to go play a sword and shield game, and you are worried about how it looks with your Japanese persona, take a second persona for fighting.
I'm out there to do my personal best. I'm out there to test myself and what I have learned, and to try to get better. I'm not concerned about "beating" the game or that I have to become better at sword and shield (except that I am helping train guys who want to learn it, so...). I'm not concerned about winning crown.
I want to do my best. I would love to win crown. And I don't care if the game is skewed towards a particular weapons format. It isn't the most common, but I know that people have won crown tournaments without sword and shield. But however skewed that is, think on this: If you're in the SCA to do archery, rapier, siege weaponry, equestrian, or dance you can't even compete for crown. Yet how many thousands of people do those activities almost exclusively?
Don't do this to win crown. Do it because you love it.

Can't I do it for both reasons? I enjoy fighting in all styles and to be honest I have already adapted to the if you can't beat them join them and have learned how to fight quite well with a sheld. Win or lose I love fighting, but I do like to win too.
I really asked more as a nod to why so many people look for a sheild when doing a Japanese persona. I make the occasional joke about "stupid sheilds" to all my fighting buddies, but I do alright.
Here I'll go from whining to bragging - No fighter that knows me takes me lightly even when I'm using a shield against their shield. They are happy to beat me and accept any defeats. Take away any shield use and they're usually happy to not lose too badly to me.
And it's an honest question. Who regularly beats shields with a great weapon in tourney's? I would like to know their techniques.
Heck I'll share one tip. When fighting with two swords, I usually just threaten with my off hand and use it to control their weapon. It can be pretty effective.

I fight Florentine a fair amount. I won't say I'm great at it, but I'm improving. One thing I have found is that when fighting nito against sword-and-board is that you can never stop moving... and that especially applies to the swords. When one sword is moving, the other should be as well, and so should your body....

That's a pretty good thread topic, though not exactly germane to menpo, so I've opened up a new thread here: No Shield to Hide Behind from one of the first articles to inspire me about two-handed weapon use. Hopefully we can get everyone to share their thoughts and ideas.

I know there are few Nihonjin in the 1st place, but it seems that no one really overcomes this disadvantage. You can't balance it. SCA combat by it's safety-oriented nature is essentially a sport. It is too far removed from being anything historical to be called that. Some techinques are employed that are similar to western and eastern martial arts, but the similarities end there. If I were you, I'd just do what I had to do to win.
