My camera's batteries were dying so I was only able to get the under kimono: The cloth is a very thin machine printed cotton with a repeating wave pattern. The cotton is very drapey and very smooth, it's not like other cotton cloths i've felt (I think the printing has evened out the fibers) The cloth was bought at the Beverly's store, along with a ton of bolts of cotton cloth with modern Japanese kimono designs (in fact, the bolt label said "kimono collection on it). Very Japanese in design (less like the typical wave pattern you see, though). It has several colors, light blue, medium blue, navy, black, and white. The sheen you see is all of the gold paint on it (a part of the cloth). It's hard to see the pattern, so here is a not so great detail taken from the big original: On the back the pattern is upside down because of the cloth, of course, but the side that really counts has it going the right way. At the top you can see the white cloth i've attached to cover up the busy pattern on the eri (when worn alone the white cloth would come off). The obi has the same pattern as this as well.

Beverly's has pretty stuff if you're looking for cotton prints, but I find them kind of pricy. (There's one here in Alameda). I tend to haunt the Discount Fabrics on San Pablo or rummage on the 2nd floor over at Stonemountain and Daughter (both in Berkeley), with occasional forays to Silk Road Fabrics in Oakland, or Thai Silks in Los Altos. Or on-line.
Very pretty though, should look nice with the painted one you did. Hope to see some pictures of you in 'em at some point.

Or on-line. True, they are a bit pricey, but that juban was made with a variety of leftovers, so the cost was stretched out. I wouldn't buy the exact amount needed for another kimono all at once, Thanks, i'm going with a blue and purple theme here. Everything looks great together. I'm just waiting for the haori himo that I won on ebay to come in from Japan so I can attach the loops to the haori, and have the whole outfit complete, I even have a fan to go with it: It came new and was opened only once so it was difficult to open at first (the thing closes with a snap). Very nice and made in Kyoto,.

I have seen others, although simpler. It was horrible, I lost out to some jackhole who outbid me at the last minute on a pair of vinyl setta with a dragon motif all over them

Psst. Come here. Closer. No, CLOSER, silly.
[WHAP!] Temper tantrums are[WHAP!] immature and un- [WHAP!] productive.
Madyass-dono has demonstrated that he can paint rings around me. His free-hand work is exceptional. Do you hear ME whining about it?
Now have some tea and calm down, Little Sister.
Crap. I've sat on my hair again.

Our fervent apologies for my Little Sister's unseemly behavior. It took me a year and a half to win a sensu on eBay. They seem to be a hot commodity with collectors and often go for stoopid prices. I suddenly ended up with three over the course of a couple of days. Amazing what you can rationalize as a valid expenditure in the Interest of Research (TM). The key to scoring good stuff on eBay is patience, setting limits, sticking to them, and having the fortitude not to commit seppuku when you discover somebody else won the auction for $0.50 more than your top dollar limit. Congratulations on your acquisition. It's lovely. Saionji

Our fervent apologies for my Little Sister's unseemly behavior. No offense taken ;D, i'm a laid back roll with the punches type. It's amazing what sells and what doesn't. I think the setta were a hot item because they just look like sqare flip-flops to most people, and those seem to be in big this year. You've hit the cart nail on the head. I was really bummed when I lost, but I realized it's not the end of the world and got over it. It may be that you won't get it right away, but the same things crop up all the time there. Thank you, i will enjoy it for years!

Nagamochi-dono needs to learn patience. He's young yet. But we love him anyway.
That is so true. Sometimes people pay ludicrous amounts for things and other times a treasure lies there and goes for minimum bid.

I have to wonder how desperate some of these people are to pay so much for things that are obviously not worth it. I think a few of them are so blinded by object lust that they will do anything to have whatever it is they want.

Offers you a salakot (conical bamboo hat) to hide behind. I'm close to getting the final pieces. I discovered something when looking for better fitting tabi online. Apparently, you can wear the "stretch tabi" with the regular traditional tabi to keep the insides of the traditional tabi cleaner. Since i'm a cheapass, and no one will see, I took a pair of thin, white dress socks, snipped the sock between my big toe and the other toes, sewed the openings for a tabi-style slit. Et voila, a good substitute. I mostly did this because any sort of ankle high sock-like garments annoy the hell out of me, and this provides cover for my lower legs, but doesn't fill the tabi out too much.

Salakot, aka jingasa IIRC. Although jingasa are usually straw, or metal if meant for war. As for the tabi, I hear you on the cheapass part. However, after finally breaking down and buying a pair, I will never do the modified ankle sock thing again. Or, to keep costs reasonable, I could just e-mail you the directions and pattern to make them? Muhndang salaat, Nagamochi
