Salakot, aka jingasa IIRC. Although jingasa are usually straw, or metal if meant for war. As for the tabi, I hear you on the cheapass part. However, after finally breaking down and buying a pair, I will never do the modified ankle sock thing again. Or, to keep costs reasonable, I could just e-mail you the directions and pattern to make them? Hey, i'd like that pattern even though I already bought a better fitting pair . I wouldn't have done the modified dress sock if they were supposed to be worn by themselves, but as a liner to protect the inside of the tabi from getting dirty, they're sufficient. I wonder, did the Japanese ever make hats out of woven bamboo, or have they always been out of straw? I also wonder how many styles were created?
