Does Japanese have an equivalent of "Eureka"? I cut my stencil out of card stock after ripping three sheets of .005 polyester film this week - usually when I was two thirds of the way through the damn pattern. Started the cuts with an X-acto knife, then did the intricate bits with cuticle scissors. Yes, that's right. What else has a blade that small with a gentle curve already built in? We had an artisan's demo at West Kingdom Crown Tourney this morning, so I demonstrated the zen of stenciling at one end of the A&S tent, well away from the lampwork glass bead demo at the other end. ;-> Neopaque white paint on dupioni. I'm really pleased with how this is coming. Saionji

Actually, when I did my stencil, my mom sent me up this x-acto knife that rotates, sort of. It's called a x-acto swivel knife. The only drawback is that it's a bit of an unwieldy weapon, that is, as a cutting impliment, I think it requires more finesse to handle than I could bring to the table. I found a link to info about it here: www.reuels.com/reuels/product11885.htmlBut love the hitare. 'Specially the stencil design you chose. (:

That sure is purdy, lady! Love the stencil design, too! Real intricate!
I found a simple fabric at wallmart, a sort of rich deep blue, with these swirling black teardrop shaped designs on it. I think I want to make a hitari out of it.

The only drawback is that it's a bit of an unwieldy weapon, that is, as a cutting impliment, I think it requires more finesse to handle than I could bring to the table. I have used one of those knives. The problem I found with them is the blade wants to spin in a direction perpendicular to where you want to cut, so you have to place the tip on your cutting surface and then pull back so it lines up along the line. It also wants to do its own thing so you have to be careful to watch it. I did manage to make it work well, but I think a plain x-acto knife is easier to control (especially since I like spinning my materials around rather than curving the blade all over). Makiwara: I love the color of that silk. I usually hate orange, but at least to me it doesn't have that synthetic nuclear orange you see on most clothing (I'd never wear that color though since orange makes me look jaundiced).

Sounds bloody dangerous - in my hands, at least!
I'm telling you - get an extra pair of manicure scissors and designate them for craft use. They're darned handy.

Status report: All that's left to stencil are the sleeves at this point.
Downside of having done this stencil out of cardstock is that paint starts clogging the really fine cuts. I cleaned them out this morning with a pin and even some recutting with the cuticle scissors and I'm going to have to do it again before hitting the sleeves. And I'm probably going to have to do some retouching by hand before I heat set the paint.
On the other hand, there's all this yummy orange silk laid out to dry over the banisters and I am so psyched about how it's going to look.

Saionji-hime, This looks really REAAAAALLY good... I am working on cutting out stensils in the same manner, and I am nearly jealous of the orange silk you found...That is exactly what I had in mind...I am fond of oranges being all Buddhist -ly and such... Date

It was one of those serendipitous eBay finds that nobody else was bidding on. And then you guys start egging me on about the idea of cross dressing, so you only have yourselves to blame. When I pulled it out of my bag at KWCRS, I was afraid Otagiri-dono wasn't going to give it back! Frankly I'm a little worried - he and I are close enough in size I might have a fight on my hands once it's finished. S.

Nope, your bandwidth has been monsterously exceeded, when you go over the usual cut off amount alot (it's possible) even you images linked to separate will not display. (BTW going and previewing your site when uploading it counts to the bandwidth limit as well as external links to things.)
