Oooh, pretty!
Fascinating. Men get blue, a color that seems conspicuous by its absence in the women's kasane.....

Just don't make me drink Coke and Midori. It sounds vile.

The whole raw edge thing just doesn't seem to add up. One would think to do rolled seams, or french seams, but to leave the raw side sticking up like that appears absolutely garish.

There is probably a good reason. It might be that the maker did a rush job, for all we know, and it got copied because somebody admired the effect. Fashion trends have started for reasons just as seemingly frivolous.
Or it could be one of those subtle symbolic reasons. I recall hearing somewhere that the people who weave Persian (or was it Turkish ?) rugs always leave a deliberate mistake in the composition of the weave because only God is perfect.
But yeah, since I hand sew most of my stuff, I have come to love the look of hand-finished seams and the concept of the showiest part of the outfit having raw seam edges is kind of bothersome to me. (Jehanne SUCKS at button holes, though....)

Should there be juban as the very first garment in the juni hitoe? How long (knee length?) would it be?
Or is the kosode the very first garment in the juni hitoe? How long (knee length?) would it be?

I usually just wear an unlined white (cotton) kosode - it gets plenty hot in the layers I have! Mine comes to just above the knee.
As far as I can tell, the kosode is the innermost layer because I've never spotted a hint of another collar under one.....

Here's a hint although I grant you that it may not be the most authoritative source: How wide is the eri on kosode, hitoe, uchigi, uwagi, kouchigi?

Okay ... so I am kinda slow, but I finally got it. 1. Kosode 2. Nagabakama 3. Hitoe 4. Itsuginu 5. Itsuginu 6. Itsuginu 7. Itsuginu 8. Itsuginu 9. Uwaginu 10. Uwagi 11. Karaginu 12. Mo www.kokusaibunka.com/02_news/2003/0613_0615_junihitoe/My kawaii-hime is not wearing the uwaginu, but she does have a juban so she also comes out to 12 pieces. I don't know if this is really the juni in junihitoe ... but it seems to work out for me.

Honored Moderator, You are WAY more ambitious - and clearly have a bigger budget to play with - than I do. Especially since I will have to pay the palanquin bearers. Saionji

My apologies Saionji-hime, I realize that these poems may reflect on your journey to Denver ... but I first read them while on my own journey away from home last September. They are here to help me with the mo.

Ah.
Any idea what sort of decorative motif you're going to go with?
It's been swirling yellow leaves around here a lot - the stenciling is done on the uchigi as of today. I can heat set the last of it tomorrow night and start assembly.....
