I saw that while doing my research. I'm not fond of her materials choice but I like the design. I'm going to use 4 oz black leather and a white drawstring for mine. I have a big wooden period-appropriate button around here somewhere... - Imagawa

*smiles* Yup, close enough for me as well. May not be for my persona's gender, class or time period but it works. Kake-memori is just a wee bit small. I can get my keys in there and a few credit cards but not really... I'll play around wth some materials tonight... 1) Kinchaku were gender neutral, as far as I can tell 2) Artisans/merchants need to have money on hand, right? 3) I think as long as you are post-Heian you should be ok, in my opinion Did you find a kinchaku design that worked for you? - Imagawa

Well, I've been experimenting. At first I made a pleather pouch (two pieces sewn together) but it didn't colapse well when the bead was pushed down. i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/Little_Rat99/P1220002.jpgI made a fabric pouch after that with four sides and a pleather base and it scrunches wonderfully but it doesn't look particularly... Japanese... i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/Little_Rat99/P1220003.jpgI may have to use the kake-memori and just put my credit cards and cash wound up in a rubber band. Then everything would fit. I'm probably just so used to carying a messenger bag chock full with my wallet, keys, lunch bento, train book, aspirin, etc. etc.... To think of traveling without tons of space to cram things into is kind of strange... (; I mean, I just recently transitioned over from using a backpack to tote around school books...

Japanese stuff tends to be very simple. All becomes clear. ;D I tend to travel light and I travel even more lightly at events. BTW, I've been using an old Tic Tac container to carry Advil in Jehanne's pouch for YEARS. It's a real space saver.

i was at the Festival of Maidens and noticed i had no way to carry change, because my wallet can not hold any so i just bought a simple pouch that looks exactly like a kinchaku, i am not sure if it actually is though

If it looks period/historically accurate from ten feet away, it's ok. Pleather instead of real leather, cotton blends instead of wool, various plastic this and thats...

BTW, the "ten foot rule" isn't really a rule. In the SCA, nobody decides how good your kit is but YOU. Only you can decide what compromises you are willing to make (time, budget, skills, etc.) or not.

That is kind of what I decided to do with the kinchaku. It's a pouch. Everybody in all cultures had pouches. So I said "that's good enough". I only made the comprimise because it was a fairly trivial thing... I'm doing my best to make everything else spot-on... - Imagawa
