Ishiyama-dono, it is hard to tell from that photo, but that looks like vege-tanned leather. What I'm working with is definitely chrome-tanned to a bright white. I just did some tests with both black and red sharpies on some small scrap, but don't know how long I wait for the results. It is certainly possible that your mileage may vary. I really can't tell you what kind of leather I used since it came out of one of those "bundle of scraps" this one dealer at Pennsic sells for cheap. If you, with your more specific knowledge of your materials, are confident, then best wishes.  I just thought I would warn you based on my experience before you put in the effort. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Not confident at all, and I greatly appreciate the heads up, which has prodded me to do some testing before just diving in.
