In response to a private message. There is a poll attached to this message, you can't see it in the 'recent' thread however. Click on the message to see the poll.
This is just to gauge interest. If you have any ideas, feel free to post them. My guess is that such a group might be less than 12 this year. But once started, might grow. Is now the time? Is Estrella the place?
Given personal priorities, I am unlikely to join such a camp this year.

Pros: 1. Fostering community among Asian personae.
2. Showing what we do to the rest of the war/Known World.
3. Having a place to throw the elusive Tousando gathering we keep talking about.
Cons: 1. The apparent difficulty the war staff has in dealing with land allocations to anyone other than a kingdom. We'd have to pick a kingdom to camp with and pre-reg as kingdom members-and-friends (which is how my old encampment got Easterners and Atenveldters and Caidans into Western space).
2. Fighters may prefer to stay with their kingdoms so they can do all that mustery marchy battle-y stuff they do.
3. Non fighters may prefer to stay with their kingdoms because they like camping with their kingdoms.
4. Camping with people you have never camped with as a group can cause unforeseen drama.

I said Yes because I'd love to camp like that. Unfortunately, I have a roomie who drives us everywhere and she doesn't walk very well, so we camp nearest to the main events. But, I think, it would be very interesting to try. We have plans, once we get settled in, to make the attempt at going to GWW, Estrella and Gulf Wars... though it's going to take some careful planning, especially with the dogs. If you guys do get the encampment up, I want pictures so I know what everyone looks like.

An all Japanese camp would certainly sweeten the deal for me. I've toyed with the idea of attending Estrella for a couple years now, and if we got this whole shebang off the ground, I'd be all over it like white on rice. To further sweeten the deal for others: how about having a foodie such as me doing the lion's share, if not all, the party cooking? Y'all supply the foodstuffs, I'll do the work. Traveling this far for an event, that's all I can offer to contribute on my budget.

I AM coming to Estrella but doubt I'd be able to camp for the full war in a Japanese encampment......I will be travelling with my knight and will likely need to be close to hand.
That being said I'm sure I can wangle a couple of nights . ;D

As of this point I do not know if the same people that I camped with last year are going to be camping this year so I would possibly be up for it.

OK, I'm going to 'fess up: this was my insane idea. Perhaps not so random, what with several visits to Yama Kaminari during Pennsic and Spearweasel flogging his Great East Asian Coprosperity Webpage. I thought "Wouldn't it be cool if we had our own Nihonmachi?" First of all, I understand if people have duties elsewhere. If you already have a place you need to be, be there. It's OK. Don't feel like you have to pitch your tent in one place for one night and someplace else on another. (Sakurai-dono, this means you! I moved three times during Pennsic 26 due to landgrab foo. It's a pain in the backside.) Second of all, if this is going to happen, the ball needs to begin rolling soon. Discounted pre-registration for Estrella closes on 10/31/07. While they will take pre-registration up to 1/31/08, having a firm idea how many bodies are committed means being able to go to one's kingdom land agent and say, "I'm coming with X number of friends, here are the dimensions of our tents." I am willing to do that if I have a firm body-count by mid-October. I will work with the West's land agent to get us what we need. The only thing I cannot do is be on site before some time on Wednesday afternoon of war for set-up because of my work schedule. I also have to tear down and be off site before God gets up on Monday, likewise because of work. If you come and you expect to get there before I do, I may ask you to report to the WK land agent and assist with Tent Tetris. Other things to think about as I jotted them down: Community supplies (firewood, propane, ice, water) and camp fees. Meal plan (contingent upon somebody wanting to be Kitchen Shogun and run the thing). Camp chores. Pooling of equipment resources (firepit, kitchen setup, etc.) In-camp events (party, classes, swap meet....). Note: The lunar new year falls on 2/7/08. Tarting the place up properly. Please help keep us a Hello-Kitty Free Zone and I promise not to bring the 2' high inflatable Godzilla that Duchess Maythen gave me. If you have banners, fly 'em. If you have lanterns, hang 'em. Giri. Unless someone else wants to go to their Kingdom to beg for a parcel of land, I have to go to mine. Estrella has this thing it does where it will pay the local group you designate for your volunteer hours. I just found out today that the new Baron of the Far West is Vail Visconti. His Excellency is a Japanese national from the Tokyo area and he's made the journey to Estrella at least twice and is coming out in a couple of weeks for our Crown Tourney. I'm willing to bet he's going to try to make Estrella again this year if my spy network is reporting accurately. I plan to have my hours go to Far West. Think about whether you want to volunteer at war and whether you would like to thank the West by having your hours go to a Western group. Thoughts, ideas and devil's advocacy greatly appreciated.

I would be willing to take some of the trouble out of "Tent Tetris" by creating a camp map from the dimensions of the size of the tents that people are bringing. Remember that the rule is 250 sq feet per person (at least it was last time I organized a camp) which is just over 15'x15'. I still don't really know what my camping commitments are for the event (plus my wife and I have talked about renting one of the apartments they have on site) but I am more then willing to donate and help with items that I will not be using for my camp if I end up camping somewhere else.
At this point I am also planning on being there early on Tuesday so I can help organize the first comers.
Anyway, I do believe that I will send Saionji-hime a message so I can help keep the ball rolling.

I'll do Kitchen Shogun for the dinners and a few of the lunches if someone is willing to trade off/tag team on the dishes. Kind of sucks bahookie if one gets stuck doing both for any given meal.

Stuckage will not happen if I have anything to say about it. Honorable people share the work. The cook does not have to wash dishes. (For the record, I've dish monkeyed in bigger camps than this one looks like it's going to be...)

For the record....
I'll be camped with the Landocrat for Estrella. She helped me at my Gate at Grand Outlandish. Therefore, I've given myself to her for the event.
I'll be working pre-event security and in all probability I'll be working motorpool during the event. I'm willing to devote spare time to the Japanese encampment if we have one. I'll help cook. I'll do dishes. I'll perform random tasks around our area as needed.
This is my first Estrella and I plan to come home dead.... if at all :-D
