*chuckling*
I could be a Zen laywoman and say, "Make Tea" but that would be to much of a Yodaish thing. *grin*

Makiwara-hime,
May I suggest a blending of a few of those ideas, with a twist? How about a class that compares the Japanese and Europeans in the context of a social situation in which they might meet?
Tell a story (with helpers dressed appropriately) of two ambassadors (one European, one Japanese) meeting in front of a foreign king or something.
Compare the basic dress (pants v. hakama, tunic v. kosode, etc). Compare basic social customs (our bow v. their bow/curtsy). Compare the differences in mindset (European chivalry v. Japanese concept of honor).
Design the class so that people draw parallels between Japanese and Europeans (as much as parallels can be drawn). Help them to understand us better by demystifying the Japanese persona a bit. You will be helping SCA nihonjin be better understood by the namban; maybe some will take us more seriously as a result. Maybe some will want to play Japanese in the future. You never know.

Help them to understand us better by demystifying the Japanese persona a bit. I've spent the past several weeks working on the demystification of the Japanese. Believe me. Two months ago, our King threw our A&S ministers under a bus got a genius idea about holding a competition to choose a kingdom Arts and Sciences Champion. (Six competitions on one day - you try finding enough judges for something like that.) I decided to put my money where my mouth is and entered five of the six competitions, four entries being Japanese themed. gurdymonkey.livejournal.com/236778.htmlWe had rain Friday night, which contributed to the less than stellar condition of the Ama no Uzume scroll when the photo was taken. Also note the glue leakage through the paper. I am much happier with the interesting failures that occurred in the shibori sampler. I want to try some different materials in Sampler 2.0. If I ever get good enough, I may attempt a garment embellished with shibori.

On the topic of Estrella....
Land Allocation for Rising Sun. Should we list Atenveldt on our pre reg as our camping group? Is Rising Sun coming along promisingly?

Please put "Rising Sun" down as your camping group. This year land allocation is going to be harsher then in years before and each group is only going to be allowed 1 person for every 10 prereged for land allocation. (Its funny that you should ask, I just found out this via e-mail this morning)
I have the land allocator looking for us specifically because we are suppose to have a better spot this year (not that last year was bad). This year we will be right on the edge of the road nearest to the battle field and merchants row, that way not only will it be easier to find us, but if it even thinks about raining again *Knocks on Wood* we wouldn't have to trudge through as much mud.
What we are doing this year is sharing land with 3 other households (including the Baron of Atenveldt) so we can maxamize the "10 to 1" ratio that we are being given this year. When we first planned it we didn't realize how bad the ratio would be, but we had a feeling there would be a crack down this year. All of the other households are as organized as I was last year (they all do pre-layouts as well) so it should be easy.
Also this year, you can get refunds of your pre-reg up to the last week before the event, so if you are holding off just in case you may not be coming, please don't. Pre-reg so we can get the land, then if you have to you can get a refund (which I hope no one has to do because I am looking forward to seeing you all).
Please throw me an e-mail with your pre-reg confirmation numbers as soon as you can, I need to get them in to land allocation by December 15 (again just found that out this morning).
Throw them in an e-mail and send them to roninpenguin@gmail.com and use the subject "Estrella Pre-Reg" so my g-mail will group all of them together.
Thanks everyone! I'm getting excided! Time to get to the wood working...

Yagyu-dono, do you want people to include the dimensions of their tents as well?

So, Yagyu-dono and Hatshepsut-hime came to visit me this weekend and we got to talking.... CONCEPT#1: Would people be interested creating an anachronism at Estrella, namely, a daily taiko class (late afternoonish, in camp, so the fighters can play too)? I can furnish 5 gallon paint buckets and poplar dowels for bachi. (I have a line on BLACK buckets to lessen the hideousness of the concept.) Respondents who say, "Wow, that would be cool, but I'm not going to be there" will be Not Helping. I need an estimate of actual interest from people who will be at war so I can coordinate the offering with the war Collegium people and figure out how many buckets, pairs of bachi and so forth will be needed. I am also planning to try to build a a shime-daiko and an okedo-daiko (or two?) out of concrete form tubing, djembe rings and strapping tape - and will post project notes in case anyone else wants to put one together. CONCEPT#2: Would there be interest in a class - or panel if anyone wants to participate at the teaching end - on East Asian persona? CONCEPT#3: Would there be interest in a class on making kosode, either a double period or over the course of two days?

At this point, I'm "iffy" on attending Estrella, so I won't say anything about taiko class. As far as the other two, I think both sound like good ideas. I would say do the kosode class over two days, especially if people are going to be hand-sewing (which really is very practical for kosode).

So it is December 1st and the time for me to get pre-reg numbers in to the land allocator is in 2 weeks. Please don't wait until last minute on this, the last thing that I would like to see happen us for us to be shuffled off to overflow camping (way out in the boonies) just because we didn't get them the info to them in time (or got it to them on that day and then it gets lost in the mass of e-mails that are recieved that day). So at this point I have recieved 1 persons pre-reg number, with myself and my wife that makes a total of 3 people. I know that we are going to have more so please get these numbers to me asap. If you have already signed up under another encampment let me know and I will get them to change it for you. Please send me those number to roninpenguin@gmail.com Before the end of the week I will be starting a couple of threads about the encampment itself (tent sizes and food specificly) so you don't need to send me those right this moment we can get lost in the details later. Thanks!

For pre reg confirmation...
I received my pre reg confirmation letter, but no confirmation number. would a digital copy of the letter be enough? Should I inquire about a confirmation number? Let me know.

BUMP: I need to inform the Collegium coordinator about class offerings soon. I have until the end of December. I want to make sure they get listed in the gate book, otherwise nobody tends to come to things. CONCEPT#1: Would people be interested creating an anachronism at Estrella, namely, a daily taiko class (late afternoon-ish, in camp, so the fighters can play too)? I can furnish 5 gallon paint buckets and poplar dowels for bachi. CONCEPT#2: Would there be interest in a class - or panel if anyone wants to participate at the teaching end - on East Asian persona? CONCEPT#3: Would there be interest in a class on making kosode, either a double period or over the course of two days? CONCEPT#4: If I can beg the use of a laptop from someone, would there be interest in an overview of pre-17th century Japanese clothing (the one I did at CostumeCon26)?

Le Sigh! The classes sound great, Rising Sun camp sounds like lots of fun and as of now, I'm almost 100% sure not to be there. I got put on some different meds last Friday that make me very sensitive to cold, so camping in Arizona in February is right out. HOWEVER, the earlier offer of crash space for travelers coming through southern California on their way to Estrella still stands.....PM me for more info.

So just after I sent in our pre-reg numbers to the land allocation people, I get an e-mail back saying that they are waving the pre-reg requirements for land allocation, all they need are mundane and SCA names.
So what does this mean? If you even think that you might be coming, get me your names and I will throw you on the land allocation list, I just need to get them to her by this Friday.
Thanks everyone!

Although the sound of crickets is deafening, the deadline for teaching submissions to get into the gate book approacheth and I must commit to something. I have offered paint-bucket taiko with a limit of 6, for Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon of war, to be held in camp. I have also just contacted a friend with a central Asian persona to see if he's interested in doing a class with me on the rewards and pitfalls of having a non-Western SCA persona. You wanna work on your garb, bring your projects along and collar me in camp - pun deliberately intended as collars seem to be the thing most people want help on.

I would have loved to join in on the classes at Estrella. *sigh* But I am stuck at the home base and no means of finances to get there. However, if someone would like to take pictures or video, that would be fantastic.
Thanks guys
